Teachers’ Day: Why Teachers Matter and the Role They Play in Shaping Children’s Futures

Every year, Teachers’ Day gives us a reason to pause and appreciate the people who spend their days teaching, guiding and encouraging children. For many students, a teacher is more than someone who stands in front of a classroom. A teacher can be the person who notices when a child is struggling, celebrates their small wins, encourages them to try again and helps them believe in themselves.

Teachers have an important place in every community because education is not only about passing examinations. It is also about helping children develop confidence, discipline, curiosity, kindness and the skills they need to navigate life.

What is Teachers’ Day?

Teachers’ Day is a special occasion dedicated to recognising and appreciating teachers and the work they do.

World Teachers’ Day is observed every year on October 5. The day provides an opportunity to recognise teachers and highlight the important role they play in education and society.

It is also a time to think about the challenges teachers face and what can be done to give them the support they need to do their jobs well.

For students and parents, it is a chance to simply say thank you.

Why are teachers so important

A child spends a significant part of their growing years in school. This means teachers can have a lasting influence on how children see themselves, their abilities and the world around them.

A good teacher does not only teach Mathematics, English, Science or other subjects. They also help children learn how to ask questions, work with others, solve problems and keep going when something is difficult.

Sometimes, the impact of a teacher may not be obvious immediately.

A child who was once afraid to speak in class may eventually become confident because a teacher gave them the encouragement they needed. A student who struggled with a subject may begin to understand it because a teacher took extra time to explain it differently.

These small moments can stay with a child for years.

Teachers help children discover their potential

Not every child learns in the same way or at the same pace.

Some children understand a lesson immediately, while others need more explanation or practice. Some are naturally confident, while others need someone to remind them that their voice matters.

Teachers are often among the first people outside a child’s family to notice these differences.

A teacher may discover that a quiet child has a talent for writing, that another student is naturally good at solving problems, or that someone who struggles academically is an excellent leader or artist.

When teachers recognise these strengths and encourage children to develop them, they help children see possibilities in themselves.

Every child deserves a teacher who believes in them

Children need adults who believe that they can grow.

A child may not always get the best grade. They may make mistakes, lose confidence or struggle to understand something. But those moments should not become a reason for them to believe that they are not capable.

The right encouragement can make a difference.

Simple words such as “Try again,” “I believe you can do this,” or “You are improving” can mean a lot to a child.

Teachers who create this kind of environment help children understand that making mistakes is part of learning.

Teachers also play a role in child protection

The responsibility of a teacher goes beyond academics.

Because teachers interact with children regularly, they may notice changes in behaviour, mood, appearance or performance that others might miss.

A child who suddenly becomes withdrawn, unusually quiet, fearful or aggressive may be experiencing something that requires attention.

This is why child protection and safeguarding in schools are so important.

Teachers need to know how to respond when they are concerned about a child’s wellbeing and how to direct the child to the appropriate support.

A safe school environment allows children to learn without constantly feeling afraid or threatened.

Teachers can help build safer communities

Schools are an important part of a community, and teachers can help children understand values such as respect, kindness, responsibility and peaceful communication.

When children learn how to treat others with respect, resolve disagreements without violence and speak up when something is wrong, those lessons can extend beyond the classroom.

Education therefore has an impact that goes far beyond school walls.

The lessons children learn about how to treat other people can influence their families, friendships and communities as they grow older.

The relationship between teachers and parents matters

Teachers and parents have different roles, but they share something important: they both want children to do well and stay safe.

Good communication between parents and teachers can help adults understand a child’s needs better.

Parents can share useful information about changes they notice at home, while teachers can provide insight into how the child behaves and learns at school.

When both sides work together rather than against each other, children are more likely to receive consistent support.

Teachers deserve support too

Appreciating teachers should not only happen on Teachers’ Day.

Teachers need the resources, training, working environment and support required to do their jobs effectively.

A teacher who is overwhelmed or working without adequate materials may find it difficult to give every child the attention they deserve.

Supporting teachers can therefore have a direct impact on children’s education.

This support can take different forms, including:

  • Providing appropriate teaching and learning materials
  • Giving teachers access to relevant training
  • Creating safe and supportive school environments
  • Listening to teachers’ concerns
  • Recognising their efforts and achievements
  • Supporting their emotional and professional wellbeing
  • Encouraging parents and communities to work with schools

When we support teachers, we are also supporting the children they teach.

How students can appreciate their teachers

Appreciating a teacher does not have to cost money.

A sincere “thank you” can go a long way.

Students can write a short note, make a card, help keep the classroom tidy or simply tell their teacher what they appreciate about them.

Sometimes, the most meaningful gift is knowing that your effort made a difference.

A student who says, “You made me understand this,” or “Thank you for believing in me,” may give a teacher a memory they carry for a very long time.

How parents can appreciate teachers

Parents can also play a part in making teachers feel valued.

This could be as simple as communicating respectfully, recognizing the effort teachers put into their children and working with the school when challenges arise.

Parents can also encourage their children to respect their teachers and understand that learning is a partnership between the child, family and school.

Appreciation does not mean ignoring problems when they arise. It means handling those problems respectfully while recognising that teachers are also people doing demanding work.

Celebrating teachers beyond one day

Teachers’ Day is a beautiful reminder of something we should remember throughout the year: teachers matter.

Behind many confident adults is a teacher who encouraged them at some point in their lives.

Behind a child who discovers a love for reading, numbers, science, art or another area of learning, there may be a teacher who noticed that interest and helped it grow.

Behind many children who learn to believe in themselves is an adult who first believed in them.

That is why appreciating teachers is also about appreciating the future they help build.

At Raising Champion Children Initiative (RCCI), we believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive, and teachers are an important part of that journey. Recognizing their work, supporting them and creating environments where they can help children flourish is one of the ways we can continue raising confident, capable and compassionate children.

HAPPY TEACHERS DAY!
